Huey Miin practises in the field of corporate, commercial and civil dispute resolution. He has appeared as counsel at all levels of the Malaysian courts and in arbitrations, both domestic and international, on disputes covering a diverse range of areas. He also sits as an arbitrator and adjudicator in construction disputes.

His focus area being in commercial arbitration and arbitration-related court proceedings, Huey Miin has successfully acted for clients in numerous arbitration related court proceedings, including both resisting and seeking enforcement and challenges to arbitral awards. A number of the reported cases he has to his credit involve arbitration-related issues of general importance.

Notable victories include successfully resisting a series of applications in the High Court and appeals/applications to the Court of Appeal and Federal Court arising therefrom for the setting aside of awards made in arbitrations relating to a production sharing contract between multi-national oil and gas companies (for whom Huey Miin acted) and the Government of India. The financial impact of these arbitrations exceeded USD400 million.

In what can be said to be a rare achievement in an arbitration against a state-owned utility company, Huey Miin successfully obtained awards favouring our client, a Malaysian independent power producer, for the recovery of shortfalls in capacity and energy payments from a utility company under a Power Purchase Agreement.

In the 2023 publication of The Legal 500 Asia Pacific, a client had this to say about Huey Miin:

‘Ooi Huey Miin is a very meticulous and composed advocate. We believe he has great knowledge and strong communication skills.’

The same publication cited Huey Miin as a Recommended Lawyer.

More recently, in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific’s 2024 edition, a client was quoted as saying: Ooi Huey Miin gives valuable and key insights.’

In the Who’s Who Legal 2023 (cited as a compilation of the “foremost legal practitioners and consulting experts in business law based upon comprehensive, independent research”), Huey Miin has been recommended as a National Leader for Southeast Asia – Construction 2023.

Huey Miin is the immediate past President of the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators. He is also on the  “Approved Faculty List” of the United Kingdom’s Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) as a tutor and assessor for CIArb’s courses on arbitration, adjudication and mediation. He shares his experience and know-how with younger practitioners by serving as a Trainer in the Malaysian Bar Council’s Advocacy Training course.
