Currently practising in the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group, Mei Mei handles a wide spectrum of corporate and commercial work ranging from day-to-day commercial matters to mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance and real estate. Apart from this, Mei Mei is active in regulatory and compliance work for clients in diverse industries (including but not limited to oil and gas, banking, factoring, hire-purchase, money lending, micro financing, peer to peer (P2P) financing and hotel management). She also advises foreign entities which have businesses in Malaysia or seek to invest in Malaysia or enter the Malaysian market in regard to the establishment of their presence in Malaysia, local licensing/regulatory requirements and exchange control issues.

Mei Mei has been at the forefront of advising on financial technology or “Fintech” for many years, starting with assisting a large multinational financial services company, which continues as a client to this day and regularly seeks advice on a myriad of legal and regulatory issues in regard to its payment system and remittance business in Malaysia (including cross-border mobile payments).

With the recent growth in Fintech, Mei Mei has experience in acting for many clients in different sectors including financial institutions, start-ups, e-commerce companies, recognised market operators (such as P2P platforms and e-services platforms), online social networking service providers, mobile companies, payment service providers (including issuers of electronic wallets), payment facilitators and international cryptocurrency exchanges.

She advises on licensing and regulatory compliance with respect to digitalisation of their businesses, various forms of payment methods and processes in the entire payments ecosystem and financial products delivered through the use of technology, such as remittances from customer to customer (C2C), customer to business (C2B) and business to business (B2B), online and mobile remittance services, the issuance of electronic money (e-money), payment services, payment gateways, storing of payment instruments, payment solutions and aggregators, payment systems, merchant acquiring businesses, digital banking, micro-financing, digital assets and digital investment management (robo-advisory). In the course of advising on the foregoing, incidental matters such as multiple cross-border issues arising from such payment methods and financial products and anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) laws are also addressed.

In recognition of her expertise and experience, Mei Mei was highly ranked in Band 2 by Chambers FinTech in the last couple of years. In the 2024 edition, Chambers has ranked her in Band 1.
